One year and a day after David FREEL’s tragic passing, we met with the surviving members of SWELL in Lyon on April 13 for their European tour commemorating the loss of their band leader.

Interview with Monte Vallier (bass), Sean Kirkpatrick (drums), John Dettman-Lytle (vocals, guitar) and Niko Wenner (guitar) by Mickaël Mottet, with the benevolent presence of Renée Clancy.

Very happy to have been able to chat (remotely) with Sean Kirkpatrick and Monte Vallier about the Swell tribute European tour to David Freel this April, passing through France. They will be in particular on April 18 at Petit Bain, in Paris.

SWELL 2023

Under the name “Sunshine Everyday Tour”, four members of the very first line-ups of the American band SWELL come together one more time to honor their singer David Freel, who died in 2022. Expect classics from their first four albums, which were released between 1990 and 1997: Swell, …Well?, 41 and Too Many Days Without Thinking with the Duyster hit “What I Always Wanted”.

In a tribute to David Freel, four of the founding members of the group are coming to Europe in April of 2023 for a month of shows and to see all of our old friends in a celebration of David.

Friday, April 14, 2023, at the Coopérative de Mai, the guys from Swell gave, on the occasion of a perfect tribute to David Freel, who passed away a year ago, one of the most moving concerts I have seen.
