Especial Swell. Everyday Sunshine: Tribute to David Freel European Tour 2023.
Author: Chals Roig.

A Special dedicated to the band Swell who are back on a tribute tour to the late David Freel, founding member and main songwriter of the band.

…between lo-fi and indie-rock but very subtly nourished by the post-punk of the previous decade, with the youthful anguish of the time but built on a sweet nostalgia thanks to lyrics that far exceed the average for quality of their peers. Swell are themselves a monument to DIY, a band with a legacy that never lost steam and still retains a cult following to this day.

The death of great celebrities hits us mercilessly and it is necessary to pay tribute whenever possible to all those artists who have provided an incentive in our lives. As important as paying tribute to those others in the shadow of popularity and also great almost unknown artists who are part of our musical life. As in my case it is the band Swell with David Freel in front.

The fact is that almost without any type of media attention, David Freel died last year at the age of 64. The causes of his death are not even known to this day.

It was at the beginning of this year and unexpectedly that the original members of Swell, the historic Monte Vallier, Sean Kirkpatrick, John Dettman-Lyttle and Niko Wenner, announced from the official website a meeting to play some songs together, I find that consolidated a few days ago with the news of a tribute tour to David Freel.

And listen, I think it’s an important event for the band to have one last chance and not only to remember David Freel, but also to give more of a run to some songs that deserve more recognition, and of course they do, if they can collect the revenue that in their day they did not obtain because they are in all their rights.

And it is that Swell have to their credit the occasional hidden gem of those lesser-known 90s, a group that I always had in the chest where you keep the most private and particular things, a group that I never knew how to place and that I do not know if it was understood either.

So I take advantage of this good news to dedicate a more than deserved and heartfelt tribute to the band and to the late artist David Freel through some of his albums.

Swell, it will no longer be as we knew it, it will never be again. But the 4 original members come together to pay tribute to David and the early years of the band. We will do a short European tour in April 2023 playing favorite songs from the first 4 albums.

According to the original Swell members statement.
