David passed away on April 12 after sudden and unexpected complications from a heart procedure. I am still stunned by this loss but also amazed by the support I’ve received from his oldest/closest friends, a local fan now friend and his bandmates.
I do want to share that he had a remarkable decade – putting all of his interests and talents into play – he built two successful businesses, remodeled his Craftsman’s home, taught himself how to surf, became a damn good drummer… and was set to take this past summer “off” surfing and working in the studio he’d just built on the Oregon coast. A line from a poem became a sort of mantra in our home: “Time is how you spend your love”. David embodied it.
Many of you have written to offer condolences, share your stories of meeting him on tour, seeing Swell play, and – of course – that Swell is still in your main rotation. I’ve always imagined Swell fans to be remarkable people and can’t help but think of you all as friends so don’t hesitate to reach out with questions, to share stories, or grab a meal if you find yourself in Portland, OR. Your messages have meant a lot; his loss, this grief has been tempered only by gratitude for those who loved David and our 8 years together.
With sadness and awe,
—Jen
